We found this when routing new cables. UK twin and earth is not allowed in France, the earth is not insulated and is too small. Any joints in French wiring must be readily accessible by an electrician.
Another common error
More hidden connections, this time badly joined with tape. Behind this joint was a leaking copper water pipe, which was not earth bonded. The client reported tingles though the tap!
Visual signs of overheating

Insulation melted, so tape end? the rest was also compromised, just not visable.
wooden trunking
be aware, some nice looking wooden moulding can be trunking for cloth covered wires, these need replacing at once!
overloaded socket
obvious signs of overload, the installation was very old, the 5amp fuse was bridged out with wire, so the socket got very hot!
